Florida Highwaymen Robert Butler original oil on board, Art Gallery24"x30"
The Florida Highwaymen were a small group of African-American artist during the 1950's through the 1980's. They painted beautiful Florida scenes on board and other inexpensive materials. They sold their work in Florida up and down major roads. Today Florida Highwaymen Art is very sought after and found all over the world. Robert Butler is one of the most famous Florida Highwaymen. He was born in GA in 1943 and moved to Okeechobee, Florida in 1947 and here on the shores of Lake Okeechobee Butler's love for the Florida wildlife began. His professional career began in 1968. In the early days, he often sold his paintings door-to-door or and on the Florida roadsides. Despite a lack of formal training, Robert developed his own style, which was exemplified by dramatically-lit and romanticized portrayals of landscapes. This is a great example of that and certain to a highlight of any advanced collection.
