Manuel Carbonell sculpture in our art gallery
Manuel Carbonell sculpture in our art gallery
This Manuel Carbonell sculpture measures approximately 29 inches tall (including the thick marble base) by 30 inches in length. It comes with a copy of the 1965 Schoeneman Galleries of E. 57th St., New York that features an exhibit of Carbonell's work. It is interesting to note the back cover of this booklet from the famed gallery. They advertise that they maintain at all times a large stock of French paintings including such noted names as Bernard, Braque, Chagall, and Degas took to name just a few. I am sure that you will also recognize Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse, Monet, Picasso and Renoir on their esteemed list. Carbonell was obviously in very good company!
This is a fabulous sculpture made in aluminum that came from a private home. It displays the best of Carbonell's talents! Viewed are two entwined figures, the couple engaged in a beautifully flowing dance.
Master sculptor Manuel Carbonell was born in 1918 and died at the age of 93 in 2011. Of Cuban descent he left Cuba for New York in 1959. He has received critical acclaim for his life sized sculptures and carvings. In 1992 Carbonell won a competition to create a sculpture at the Miami's Bricknell Avenue bridge which was titled The Pillar of History. It is 36 feet tall with 158 fogures! His large-scale sculptures are found all over the world including a Shanghai Park, the Gerald Ford Presidential Museum, in Key West and numerous Florida cities. After his first conventional studies of sculpture in stone and marble he began to use Bronze and aluminum which were materials that could be used to express reality with the utmost simplicity and motion.
